About Us

Norwich School of Motoring is a Driving school based in Norfolk. The Driving school was set up by me (Jon Colman) after 20 years of working with other driving schools in Norwich. During my years as an instructor i have gained knowledge and experience on my way to becoming a Top Grade A instructor. I have shared the joy and happiness of many student passes with a very high successful pass rate.

I conduct the popular hourly lessons as well as offering intensive hours (between 10-20 hours per week), also offering Pass Plus and Refresher lessons to those who haven't driven for a while and wish to regain a better level of confidence before getting back on the roads. I endeavour to meet peoples course requirements as much as possible, tailoring tuition to their needs.

I am very experienced in training those wishing to become driving instructors, taking them all the way through the process of applying to train, to fully qualifying as an instructor.

I am a patient teacher who believes lessons should be enjoyable whilst delivering the highest standard of tuition backed up by my experience as a superior instructor helping people succeed.

Our Courses

Hourly Lessons

Hourly lessons are recommended to those who have limited availability weekly to fit in the driving time. Lessons can often be fitted around your schedule (depending on our instructor availability), so that you can continue to train around work or other appointments and responsibilities.

Hourly lessons also allow you to spread the cost of your driving tuition as well as allowing you to put all your concentration into the whole period of the lesson. If hourly lessons are for you, get in touch and we will endeavour to accommodate you around your other commitments. At the moment we cover postcode areas NR1-NR8 for home collection and drop off, but we hope to be able to cover more areas in future.

Intensive Hours

We offer semi intensive Hours/Block Bookings. The Driving hours are usually during weekdays, and hours are arranged between the Instructor and Pupil. The days and times are made available based on the Instructor's availability on each particular week, but usually a up to 10 hours will be made available per week. The amount of hours a candidate requires is based on their previous experience and current standard. It's best to have already passed your Theory Test before these courses if you are already at a good Learner Driving Standard, and are hoping for a Practical Test at the end of your hours. Intensive hours can also be useful if you are looking to gain experience, and improve your driving over a short period.

Pass Plus

The Pass Plus scheme was introduced by the D.V.S.A. to allow pupils to further improve their driving skills after passing the Learner driving test whilst still under supervision of an approved driving instructor.

The course is usually conducted all in one day and will include some of the subjects the pupil would have encountered during their driving lessons but will cover extra modules which may not have been covered before passing the driving test, such as wet weather driving, night time driving and motorway driving.

The Pass Plus can also reward the candidate with lower insurance costs with certain insurers. If weather conditions and light conditions are not conducive to covering all subjects fully, then a Q&A discussion would usually take place to help improve the pupils knowledge about that particular subject . The Pass Plus route will usually be driving towards, and close to London.

Instructor Training

Our Instructor Training will be conducted by our highest grade instructors who have experience at taking candidates through the process, including:

  • How to apply to begin Instructor training.

  • The steps required to fully qualify for Instructor Training.

  • Support with free advice whilst under our tuition, as well as after the training period for as long as you remain with our company.

  • The course will take you through the Three-part stage (1.Theory, 2.Practical 3.Ability to Instruct), towards becoming a fully qualified instructor.

Once you pass Parts 1 & 2 of the course and reach the minimum required hours of part 3 training as a P.D.I. (potential driving instructor), you will be offered the opportunity to gain the experience with real pupils to increase your knowledge and understanding on how to qualify as an A.D.I. (approved driving instructor).

Passing the Theory Test

The current Driver Theory Test consists of two parts, the multiple choice section and hazard perception. The multiple choice section is based on 3 books, the Highway Code, Know your Traffic signs and Driving The Essential Skills, which can be purchased online, or at some larger book stores. There are also many good apps on the play stores which are free, or the better ones may cost a small price. On the Multiple choice questions you will need to score a minimum of 43/50, this will be made up of 45 written multiple choice questions plus 5 case studies where you will be shown a short moving video clip with multiple choice questions.
The hazard Perception is 14 moving video clips in which you need to register your anticipation of a forthcoming danger which may cause you to slow suddenly or alter your course. You will need to score a minimum of 44/75 to be successful at the hazard perception. We can take time in the car during your Driving Lessons if you would like any assistance and help with any of Theory Test section. The Theory Test itself is conducted at a local authorised Theory Test Office by the D.V.S.A.

Refresher Lessons

Refresher lessons are offered to anyone who wishes to use an instructors car and knowledge to help improve their confidence. These courses are designed to accommodate anyone from recently passed, to someone who has not driven for a lengthy period of time. Maybe you have problems with parking, busy driving times or avoid multiple lane carriageways. Perhaps you have had the misfortune of being involved in a collision, even if it was just as a passenger, then this could be a course to help. As a qualified driver it would be up to you to choose how many hours you wish to do, but you can always ask us for advice.
